Tips on How to Prolong the Lifespan of Your Garage Door
Garage Door Repair and Maintenance Tips
Before you attempt any
, first check the metal tracks in the garage. Inspect the mounting brackets which hold the tracks on the walls. When they are loose, simply re-tighten them at the brackets. Working inside your garage with the door closed, examine the tracks for any flat spots, crimps or dents. Should you see any damaged spots, take them out with a rubber mallet. However, when the tracks are too badly damaged, you will need to replace them.
Use a level to make sure the tracks are straight and properly aligned. Horizontal tracks must slope down toward the back of the garage; with roll-up garage doors, the vertical sections must be exactly plumb. Both tracks have to be at the same height on the walls. When the tracks are not aligned properly, you need to loosen but not remove the screws or bolts which hold the mounting brackets and tap the tracks back into position. Recheck the tracks using a level to make sure they are in the correct position; then re-tighten the screws on the mounting brackets.
Clean the tracks using a concentrated household cleaner which will remove any dirt or hardened grease. Make sure you clean the rollers thoroughly
and wipe the tracks and rollers dry. See if there is any loose hardware, and tighten when necessary. With swing-up garage doors, inspect the plates where the spring is mounted to make sure the screws are tight, and re-tighten any screws which have worked themselves loose.
With roll-up garage doors, inspect the hinges which keep the door sections together; and re-tighten any loose screws, also, when you see any damaged hinges you will need to replace these too. Sagging on one side of the door can sometimes be corrected by servicing the hinges. When a screw hole has become enlarged, replace the screw with a longer one, and remember to use a hollow fiber plug that is dipped in some carpenters’ glue. For all your
